brighter day

goodmorning, friends. did you notice the new banner today? did you know that it means that the shop is now open?! after a long day and very late night (i won't even tell you how late we stayed up, it was like the old days of frecklewonder, poor matt was stuck in the paypal sandbox testing the shopping cart for like, 2 hours, whadda nightmare).

i had been calling this shop update the "january update" and boy, did we make it in by the skin of our teeth! it's january 31st today. wow. it never ceases to amaze me how much work, brain bending, and time it takes for two regular ol' folks to build a web shop. one that's user friendly and pretty, where it's images line up and don't break, and where links take you to the correct place and quantities are updated correctly when an item is sold, and so,so many other things. none of this would be remotely possible without the brains behind what you see, and that's matt. a HUGE thanks to you, matt, for all the long hours that you work, and for busting out your amazing skills yet again. i love you to the moon and back a million zillion times infinity.

there are a couple things we are still working on, one of which being that when an item is sold, it will switch from the products name to actually say 'sold' as it has in the past (on the thumbnail shop pages)-- i know that before long, you guys will be driven crazy as you are attempting to cruise around and shop, only to find out that things are selling at a pretty fast clip. this will be fixed asap (for now, i am manually updating these items as they sell, which requires a bit of babysitting of the site, and eventually i will have to get up from this seat- but i am keeping a close eye and making these changes as best as i can). also, i am working on building the friends page, which is currently displaying nothing and making it look like i don't have any!!! those are the two main things i can think of at the moment. the good news is that there's an absolute TON of stuff. this is the first time that i have used a dress form to model all the stuff-- i hope that you guys find that the descriptions and pictures are plenty for you to get an item figured out. as always, if you see something and you have additional questions, give me a shout.

and on a different note, thank you so much to those of you who sent such nice, heartfelt comments to tuesday's post. we're all hanging in there, and it's really nice to know that you guys are sending good vibes, thoughts and prayers our way. i appreciate it more than you could know.

so, happy thursday! go on and check out that shop!!!

cats have it made

you know that old saying, "when it rains, it pours"? it's been that sort of week. and it's only tuesday.

i wish i could say that it's rained happiness and sunshine in my world, but instead- in a blink of an eye practically- i went from wrapping up a website, and having my biggest worry be about weather or not i was going to actually meet my self-imposed deadline, to worrying about 3 different family members who have sudden medical issues, one of whom is in the ICU, another is requiring emergency surgery and the other is more complicated than i can even to get into at this time.

is this possible?

today i wish that things were simple, and i could roll around in a bathtub, endlessly entertained by a cotton ball.

close but no cigar

well, crap.

no shop yet. but it's certainly not for lack of effort. we ran into a few technical snags yesterday, and truth be told, i completely underestimated the amount of time it takes to prepare so many items. this is, hands down, the largest shop update frecklewonder has ever seen. and i guess after several months of being away, i'm a little out of practice? anyhow, if i kept going with product photos, i could probably have 300 items in the shop. in order to not completely overwhelm myself right outta the gates, i am going to start with about half that. so that's good news right?! 150 or so fun vintage pieces!

anyhow, folks. i sincerely apologize. and believe me, no one is more bummed than myself and my sweetie.
after an entire weekend of work, we had really hoped to start the week off with a bang, and not with this silly blog post about why not, and blah blah blah. anyhow, it was a late night. followed by an early morning. the sun is barely up and i have to go prepare lunches for the day.

thanks to everyone for being so excited.
i'll keep ya updated.

homestretch

brr, is it cold out there tonight!

as promised, i am here with an update on our progress with the big shop reopening. we are still on track for tomorrow, so barring any major catastrophes, you should be able to view the goods tomorrow. i can't promise that it'll be early in the day, but we are pulling for sometime tomorrow. (aye! i shudder to actually type that, but i am in good spirits here, feeling confident, and definitely excited.)

hope ya'll are having a nice weekend, and thanks for being so excited for the return of frecklewonder.
xo! jenny

hard work made easy

it's worth noting: when you are facing a long day at the desk, staring at the computer, some lovely spring flowers make the view oh, so much nicer.

(pretty pink + green bouquet, a 'just because' from my mister this week.)

and, when you're in that middle of the afternoon slump, and the tiredness is setting in just a bit, it's a real treat to have such a sweet face pop around the corner after a day at school. kisses + hugs and a little news from the day revives me better than that cup of coffee i was fantasizing about ever could.

back to work!

whole lotta stuff goin on

hello friends.
there are currently over 45 pairs of shoes laid out on my living room floor, getting their photos + measurements taken. all will be in the shop, which will very likely open this weekend. i hate to nail myself down to a specific day or time, as i have learned from many past shop updates that things always come up, little bugs need to be worked out, technical difficulties can make a person want to pull their own eyes out when a deadline must be broken.  BUT, matt and i feel pretty darn confident about it being finished and ready for this weekend, as we are both wrapping up some last minute details. when we are ready to pull the trigger, i will give a little head's up in the blog, so that you guys can avoid sitting around and refreshing the page, as many people have told me they will be doing. of course that is the last thing i want- i don't want you all glued to your desks, waiting and wondering, with your little hearts pitter-pattering for a certain vintage piece- i want you to be out and about, doing your thing. just check in with the blog at some point tomorrow and i will let you know what the status is for a sunday launch, k?

so happy friday to you all! i'll chat'cha tomorrow. xo, j

stunners

thought i'd share with you the gorgeousness of these here vintage aigner boots. they don't fit me, not by a longshot, so they'll be in the shop along with 20+ other pairs of amazing vintage kicks.

in my dreams

spotted my car again yesterday. i first saw it in the parking lot of a shopping center near my house- a handsome, white haired older gentleman was driving, and i was only able to catch a quick glimpse. but it was enough to make me talk to myself in the car and ooh and ahh and squeal and wish and hope and dream. and then yesterday, i was driving out on a rural road, on my way to this fantastic little mennonite-run shop that specializes in bulk + organic foods, meats, cheeses and baked goods (yum) when i realized he was in front of me again. i attempted to take a few (terrible) cell phone pics when at traffic lights, which i will not post here because they don't do the car justice. i followed him for a bit, wishing, hoping that he was on his way to the same store that i was so i could gaze at it dreamingly, for just a minute or two longer... long story short- he turned into a car dealership and i followed him in without ever really having a plan. (i mean, my first thought was, "OMG, he is NOT going to SELL this car HERE, is he?!") it was bitter cold out, little snowflakes were whipping around in the wind, and i hopped out of my car like a kid in a candy store and ran over to him, introducing myself, hoping he didn't find me to be a lunatic, and told him how beautiful i thought his car was. he stood there in his jeans and jean jacket lined in sheepskin, all smiles. he was charmed, and charming and we proceeded to have a lovely little chit-chat about his car. a 1962 white ford falcon s-t-a-t-i-o-n-w-a-g-o-n in gorgeous condition.

i. love. this. car.

i told him that if he ever thought of parting with it, he had a happy buyer in me. he said to me, "sweetie, i don't think it's really worth a whole lot". i told him it was a treasure of all treasures as far as i'm concerned. turns out we live in the same neighborhood, so maybe one day i'll be lucky and he'll offer it for sale?

i got home and quickly googled some images, so as to share with you guys. here is a stunner out of ohio:
(i mean, can you just imagine?!?!?)

life would be pretty damn near perfect, i think, if the hubs and i could pack up the kids in one of these suckers and hit the open road. a full thermos of coffee for matt, some old fashioned sodas on ice, a few homemade rice krispie treats, a camera and some good tunes... i can hear it now- henry and i would sing our duets that we love so much (time's a' waistin' by june + carl and some of those great old april stevens + nino tempo tunes) and we could pull into any ol' random tiny town for a little lunch and thrift shopping. wow. that would be the deal. and now i wake up. ha!

so in the meantime, i'm sitting here at the computer, working on editing images for the shop update.

that's about all the news i got for ya, folks. it's been a really busy week so far, and my poor sweetie (aka, the frecklewonder web guru) hasn't had any time to give to the shop as he has had deadlines and time crunches at work and is getting to the point of zapped. i do not tell you any lies when i say that a) we are working very hard, b) it really is just around the corner, c) i'm totally sorry to be stringing this out, and d) i promise, it'll be worth the wait.

see?

lots of cute things. LOTS.

January 18, 2008

happy friday

i'm a little late in the day to wish you a happy friday, but what the heck, HAPPY FRIDAY. hope ya'll have a great weekend. today was nice, about 50 degrees, so we experienced quite the meltdown from yesterday's snow. good thing henry got a nice chance to play in it yesterday, cause it's pretty much all gone today.

you might have noticed (if you have visited the shop page in the last day or so) that there is a new temp page up with the promise of the shop being open real soon. that's my plan for the weekend: to finalize all the stuff that needs finalizing-- write the descriptions for everything, do all the measurements for the clothing, and stuff like that. i am bound and determined to get the shop reopened ASAP! send a little good ju-ju my way, please? i need all the ju-ju i can get.

so matt's coming home with pizza (hooray for not having to cook and clean, i think i'll just whip up a salad and we'll call it a meal) and we are having family movie night tonight. not quite sure what we are watching yet, but if you know me, you know i'll be asleep before the halfway point. xox!

January 17, 2008

lovely white stuff

goodmorning from central virginia! as you can see, we are getting some real snow today, for the first time this season. from what i can tell, it's supposed to be falling all day and into the night.
schools are closed, the mister is at home working, we've got some nice warm fires going, henry is "having a party" as he puts it, in our bedroom, complete with all his stuffed buddies, oodles of pillows and blankets and a little pbs morning cartoon schedule.

it's a good day, folks.

January 16, 2008

happy hump day

thanks for such a great response to yesterday's first green post. it does my heart a world of good to hear that so many of you are making small, easy changes in your lifestyle in order to live more thoughtfully towards your environment and the world at large. i look forward to continuing this discussion as well (eco friendly diapers, cat litter, composting, gardening & housecleaning, and buying secondhand & using the great stuff that's already out there in the world- those are just a few of the green-living topics on my brain), so thank you!!!

in other news, i spent some time today going through my fabrics, searching for some to use in a quilt or floor mat for the baby's room. i think that i have made my mind up with the white palate, and little touch of vintage color here and there. overall, i want the room to be simple, and calming to the eye. and i figure when she is older, we can add some fun, bright colors easily- especially with a white backdrop. changing up the curtains, adding toddler toys and such will really brighten up the room when the time comes. i'll keep you posted as the nursery progresses.

each wednesday, i volunteer in henry's classroom. it's been great fun, and i know henry really appreciates the time that i am there. he is always such a little love bug as soon as i walk in, he can't seem to resist blowing me kisses or getting up from his seat as soon as he can to come over and give me a squeeze. and his classmates have become very interested in this baby in my belly, especially as time goes on and the bump grows on... before we found out if it was a sister or a brother for henry, lots of kids were correct in predicting a sister. one girl even said that she could hear the baby girl in there, and she sounded really cute. it's a really nice little part of my week, and i hope that i am able to continue to volunteer next year when the little lady is here. (hint, hint, mom. we might need your help with this!)

so that's about it, folks. hope you guys are pluggin' through the week ok!

January 15, 2008

food for thought

it's a lovely 20-something-feels-like-18-degrees outside. i think i have reached the point where i'm sort of feeling over it. you know, this winter business. i'm ready for the birds to return, for the grass to be green and dewy in the morning, for the sunlight to hang around for a couple more hours a day. and for it to not seem like 4 am when i have to drag my butt out of my nice warm bed at quarter to six each weekday. i'm kind of tired of being chilly in the house (we have been extremely cautious about turning on the heat at all this year, and have opted for using our fireplaces more and running those trusty delonghi heaters in the bedrooms at night. translation: the gas bill was insane last year.) and oh, it'd be really nice to put on a lovely vintage cotton dress and sit outdoors for lunch. ok, i'll stop now.

so i've had the whole "green movement" on my mind for a while now. i've heard some folks talk negatively about how it's just so trendy, and every other person is driving one of those funny looking prius things, and blah-blah-blah with global warming, but really? could it be a bad thing for it to be trendy to be environmentally conscious? as for hybrids, we've owned one (a honda) for a little over a year, i don't know how i could ever go back. if you really don't give a hoot about the environment, don't you want to just save money on gas and get more bang for your buck? and as for the bigger picture, i think all you really have to do is look around- at all the people, the waste, the vehicles and trucks and fast food places and wal-marts and strip malls and so much more. and think about where we'll be in 25 years, even. can we really just keep on keepin' on?

so it's got me wondering about you guys. is there anything that you've done in the new year to "go green"?

take for example, recycling- what i consider to be a basic. but maybe in your life, or in your location, it's not? do you recycle? does your town or neighborhood make it easy? i know for us, even though we've recycled for years, it's often a struggle to kind of "make it work" within the house. i'm on the search for a recycling station for my own home that doesn't really look messy or seem overwhelming, and that's close by the kitchen so that it's user friendly. and this is probably the one thing that keeps people from incorporating it into their daily life. it's not all that convenient, right? you've got trash hanging around, and you have to make an extra trip to the recycling center each week to get rid of it. you don't really have the space for 4 or 5 different bins, you've only got an area for the actual trash can itself. but you know, it's really not all that inconvenient, once you just make the commitment. and it really will make a difference. and you'll be proud of yourself for doing your part.

as for our family, we've made a few small (but totally easy) changes in the past couple months that i know you could do as well. and the thing is: i could go on and on about this. and i don't want to seem preachy, and i don't want to overwhelm anyone. so i thought i would create a new category in the blog, and maybe post about it whenever it's on my mind, maybe once a month. and together, we can tackle some of these issues. whaddya say?

so we'll start with an easy one: RE-USABLE BAGS. here's the thing. if you are like me, and you are the main 'domestic-go-getter' (for lack of a better term) in your household (you know, the grocery store person, the overall shopper), you can come home with a lot of plastic bags in just one week. if you go to the market and you have 8 plastic bags of food (sometimes the baggers will double bag the heavier stuff) then you are coming home with say, a dozen plastic bags per week. that's roughly 50 a month, 600 per year. just from the grocery store. where do these end up? under the kitchen sink, until the bag full of bags gets so big that you just get irritated and throw it away? do you take it back to the grocery store and stick it in one of those recycling bins? use it for kitty litter? the bathroom trash can? taking leftovers over to your sister's house? all 600 of them? and then there are all the other places that you move through in your daily life. target. department stores. the goodwill. the pet food store, and on an on. everyone is sticking your stuff in a plastic bag. even if it's just one item. in it goes. do we really need to bag a pack of gum? or a book? or a box of shoes, crackers, or new CDs? (it's worth mentioning: i've read that the average person takes home 1000 of these per year. one thousand!!!)

if you are a woman, you are one step ahead in that, you already (most likely) carry a purse. if you are a guy, perhaps you don't. but maybe you carry a messenger bag, backpack or brief case? well, maybe you can do what i do, which is to carry along a few re-usable grocery bags inside your purse or messenger for all those times when you are out and about and someone is handing you another one of those plastic numbers.

and, just like incorporating recycling into your daily life, this is easy-peasy. it might take you about a week to remember to take along your re-usables, and hand them to the kind grocery person before they get started with your groceries. and hey! if you are crafty, you can sew your own, if you are not, there are plenty of places that you can make your one-time purchase. even the grocery stores these days sell their own versions of re-usable bags. and often times they are like, $1 each and they donate them to a greater cause.

alright. something to think about. i'm going to get off my soap box now, and head into the kitchen to warm my chilly fingers by the fire. happy tuesday, everyone :)

January 10, 2008

quiet as a churchmouse

today's lunch. pita with tuna + greens. clementine. chocolate soy. and a little brainstorming for the baby's room. i was all set on a color scheme and design, but now i find myself re-thinking things after flipping through all my old issues of martha baby. i know for sure that i don't want to go with the traditional all-pink look just because it's a girl. i'm actually thinking more on the minimalist, all white side of things. with a sweet little vintage twist. time will tell. i have a few projects on the brain: curtains, a patchwork playmat, and a few little personalized softies. i am trying to get myself geared up to make these things, but truth be told, i am having a kind of unmotivated week. and today in particular, i am just feeling sort of blah. maybe just tired? it hit me that the restless, broken nights of sleep might have arrived. suddenly, i find myself waking up a whole bunch just to get into a more comfortable position. my bump is in full effect and oy, vey and i have a little more than 3 months to go.

not much else to say today, sorry! hope to be back with something a little more exciting next time.

January 07, 2008

dreaming

i'm having a moment.

if only moneyshoes grew on trees.

(from anthropologie and urban outfitters dot coms.)

the weekend in pictures

it was an unseasonably warm weekend, and we all found ourselves pretty productive as a result. spent lots of time outdoors: matt was tending to his beloved compost pit, henry was buzzing around doing all sorts of stuff, and i was multitasking between christmas break-down and light yard work.

did i tell you that i received a waffle maker for christmas from my sweetie? i mentioned it once that i wanted one, way back in the fall, and he was great to tuck that info aside + remember it for later.
we have since enjoyed several delicious belgian waffle + fruit breakfasts.

and, matt made bread! something he has been really into the last year or so- in fact, henry and i gave him a copy of "The Bread Bible" for his birthday. (if you are into baking, or know someone that is, i highly recommend this book). i am happy to report that we have been the lucky tasters of his various bread bakings.

we also spent a good chunk of saturday morning in henry's room- just sort of tidying and getting a few things out for a goodwill donation. it always feels nice to clear out those sneaky things that seem to make their way into your child's hands when you're out and about in the world. you know what i mean? like, when you're happily browsing at the antique mall and the nice older lady suggests that your child take a few free toys from the basket at the door. and you know these toys- they're like the happy meal rejects and such- complete junk- but you don't want to look like a total scrooge, so you say, "sure sweetie, take one or two", and in your mind you can't wait for the moment to pass it right along. i have my own thoughts on new laws that should be in place to stop the production of such useless garbage, but that's a rant for another day :)

anyhow, a clean, smart room is always a good thing.

hope you all enjoyed a nice, relaxing weekend.

happy monday!

little imelda

she's not here yet, but her shoes are.

thought i'd start sharing some favorite things i've got stashed away for the little lady.

really, is it any surprise that this little girl is going to have a closet full of fun?

January 03, 2008

january shop update

we're almost there. brand new site. tons of new goods. coming soon!!!

a day in the life

First day back at school and work yesterday. Henry actually shed a few tears the night before, as we were reminiscing our vacation, and talking about how it was the last night. He really did just want to have one million more days of vacation!!! Is that so wrong?! So I explained to him that a vacation wouldn't feel so special if you were constantly in vacation mode. And that it's a real treat because it doesn't happen all that often. Shoot, who I am kidding- I would love to have one million more days of vacation!!! Nothing beats kicking it around the house at your own pace, doing stuff you want to do when you want to do it, being all relaxed, having time for movies and baking and all that other good stuff. *sniff*

Henry quickly announced to me yesterday, as he was getting in the car after school that he had "NO HOMEWORK TODAY!". So, we came home and played a few rounds of cards while listening to records and chit-chatting some more about the day's events. The big story of Henry's day was that a girl in his class had bought lunch that day and her chocolate milk was bad!! As in: "OLD, MOM! It was from LAAAAAAAST JANUARY!!!!". Really? Year old milk? Is that even possible? Just be glad you bring your own lunch, I said.

after the cards + conversation, henry spent some time at his new easel, while i started a pot of chili for dinner. is it cold where you are? we are enjoying a lovely 20 degrees at this very moment, last night it was in the teens with a windchill of 8. EIGHT, i tell you!!!!!

i've had one of those major productive mornings so far. the kind my mom calls,"hit the ground running". i think that is a trait i get from her. often times, it is my most productive day- the one where i wake up, have a little coffee and within 10 minutes i am a human tornado. i've already had coffee, made lunches, kissed the boys off to work and school, completely cleaned the kitchen, had a little breakfast, started some laundry, edited a handful of shop photos and it's not even 10 am. pretty good, considering there are many days lately where i am barely out of my slippers by this point.

i shall return shortly with a little shop news. until then, happy thursday!

January 01, 2008

happy 2008

henry and i went out for a milkshake yesterday and took a nice, long walk together around a very quiet downtown. most shops were closed, being that it was new year's eve, but a few of our favorite thrifts and antique stores remained open, much to our surprise + happiness.

i picked up a new/vintage camera for my collection, a happy apple for the baby's room (remember those red fisher price apples with the little jingle-bell inside, circa 1970s?), and a few other goodies from the thrift. but most of the afternoon was spent just walking around, snapping some pics, trying to learn more about my new(ish) camera (a nikon i've wanted for ages), and chatting with henry as he motored around the streets and alleys of our little downtown.

it's a quiet afternoon here at the house today, spending some time editing photos for the big re-opening of the shop, and just enjoying the last day of our amazing, looooooong 2 week holiday break together. matt was lucky enough to be off work for all this time too, a real treat for the 3 of us.

it's been nice.

happy new year, all!
