weekend recap

spent a few hours on saturday afternoon in a new favorite antique mall with henry, my mom, sister, aunt and cousin. good finds all around. my mom collects maxfield parrish prints, and was thrilled to find one she didn't have. my sister added to her little vintage milk pitcher collection, my cousin picked up some pretty necklaces, and i- well, i went a little nuts. had been coveting this stunning 50's cocktail gown that i finally decided to seal the deal on (and plan on wearing for my upcoming 10th anniversary!), nabbed some mint condition johnny cash + hank williams records, found a super cute red metal 50s kitchen/bar cart that i'm going to use in the baby's room (which, incidentally ended up changing the entire design idea that i had going on, but i am now sold on a mostly red + white theme, more on that later), got a couple sets of vintage cocktail glasses (one of which has a matching cocktail shaker- dreamy!) and a few other bits and bobbles that i can't even think of at the moment. at the end of the day, we were all pooped. as i like to say, antiquing is an exhausting sport :P

otherwise, we just took it pretty easy. it was super windy on sunday, and we had plans to make waffles for breakfast but ended up losing power for a couple hours. so we hit up this local "greazy spoon" breakfast joint called "weasie's kitchen". it was the kind of breakfast that leaves you feeling sort of stunned and in need of a nap afterwards, you know? the company was nice though, and it was good to eat something other than cold cereal. we've been making nice breakfasts on the weekends, and i think henry has gotten quite used to rolling out of his room to a nice spread on the dining room table.

matt brought home some movies on friday night- one of which was some of those old pink panther cartoons. we ended up snuggling in our room (the three of us, plus the cats of course) and watching those on both nights. it was c-o-l-d outside, and it seemed like the perfect thing to do.

i suppose that about sums it up!

today i am prepping images for another shop update, some of which will be available today. i just have to take some quick measurements and get the new things added.

hope you all had a nice weekend. happy monday!

cats have it made

you know that old saying, "when it rains, it pours"? it's been that sort of week. and it's only tuesday.

i wish i could say that it's rained happiness and sunshine in my world, but instead- in a blink of an eye practically- i went from wrapping up a website, and having my biggest worry be about weather or not i was going to actually meet my self-imposed deadline, to worrying about 3 different family members who have sudden medical issues, one of whom is in the ICU, another is requiring emergency surgery and the other is more complicated than i can even to get into at this time.

is this possible?

today i wish that things were simple, and i could roll around in a bathtub, endlessly entertained by a cotton ball.

lovely white stuff

goodmorning from central virginia! as you can see, we are getting some real snow today, for the first time this season. from what i can tell, it's supposed to be falling all day and into the night.
schools are closed, the mister is at home working, we've got some nice warm fires going, henry is "having a party" as he puts it, in our bedroom, complete with all his stuffed buddies, oodles of pillows and blankets and a little pbs morning cartoon schedule.

it's a good day, folks.

the weekend in pictures

it was an unseasonably warm weekend, and we all found ourselves pretty productive as a result. spent lots of time outdoors: matt was tending to his beloved compost pit, henry was buzzing around doing all sorts of stuff, and i was multitasking between christmas break-down and light yard work.

did i tell you that i received a waffle maker for christmas from my sweetie? i mentioned it once that i wanted one, way back in the fall, and he was great to tuck that info aside + remember it for later.
we have since enjoyed several delicious belgian waffle + fruit breakfasts.

and, matt made bread! something he has been really into the last year or so- in fact, henry and i gave him a copy of "The Bread Bible" for his birthday. (if you are into baking, or know someone that is, i highly recommend this book). i am happy to report that we have been the lucky tasters of his various bread bakings.

we also spent a good chunk of saturday morning in henry's room- just sort of tidying and getting a few things out for a goodwill donation. it always feels nice to clear out those sneaky things that seem to make their way into your child's hands when you're out and about in the world. you know what i mean? like, when you're happily browsing at the antique mall and the nice older lady suggests that your child take a few free toys from the basket at the door. and you know these toys- they're like the happy meal rejects and such- complete junk- but you don't want to look like a total scrooge, so you say, "sure sweetie, take one or two", and in your mind you can't wait for the moment to pass it right along. i have my own thoughts on new laws that should be in place to stop the production of such useless garbage, but that's a rant for another day :)

anyhow, a clean, smart room is always a good thing.

hope you all enjoyed a nice, relaxing weekend.

happy monday!

a day in the life

First day back at school and work yesterday. Henry actually shed a few tears the night before, as we were reminiscing our vacation, and talking about how it was the last night. He really did just want to have one million more days of vacation!!! Is that so wrong?! So I explained to him that a vacation wouldn't feel so special if you were constantly in vacation mode. And that it's a real treat because it doesn't happen all that often. Shoot, who I am kidding- I would love to have one million more days of vacation!!! Nothing beats kicking it around the house at your own pace, doing stuff you want to do when you want to do it, being all relaxed, having time for movies and baking and all that other good stuff. *sniff*

Henry quickly announced to me yesterday, as he was getting in the car after school that he had "NO HOMEWORK TODAY!". So, we came home and played a few rounds of cards while listening to records and chit-chatting some more about the day's events. The big story of Henry's day was that a girl in his class had bought lunch that day and her chocolate milk was bad!! As in: "OLD, MOM! It was from LAAAAAAAST JANUARY!!!!". Really? Year old milk? Is that even possible? Just be glad you bring your own lunch, I said.

after the cards + conversation, henry spent some time at his new easel, while i started a pot of chili for dinner. is it cold where you are? we are enjoying a lovely 20 degrees at this very moment, last night it was in the teens with a windchill of 8. EIGHT, i tell you!!!!!

i've had one of those major productive mornings so far. the kind my mom calls,"hit the ground running". i think that is a trait i get from her. often times, it is my most productive day- the one where i wake up, have a little coffee and within 10 minutes i am a human tornado. i've already had coffee, made lunches, kissed the boys off to work and school, completely cleaned the kitchen, had a little breakfast, started some laundry, edited a handful of shop photos and it's not even 10 am. pretty good, considering there are many days lately where i am barely out of my slippers by this point.

i shall return shortly with a little shop news. until then, happy thursday!
